Extended Producer Responsibility for automotive plastics
In collaboration with BKV GmbH, the think tank of the German plastics industry, this project evaluates the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system for automotive plastics and identifies strategies to strengthen its implementation.
The EU's proposed End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR) specifies and reinforces EPR obligations for automotive manufacturers, including requirements related to plastic materials. Against this backdrop, the study assessed the current state and future development pathways of EPR for automotive plastics. It examines the EU legislative context, clarifies roles and responsibilities along the supply chain, benchmarks EPR schemes in other sectors, compares national ELV waste-management systems, and identifies key industry initiatives.
The findings will support plastic producers, recyclers, policymakers, and automotive OEMs in clarifying the challenges and opportunities associated with EPR implementation in the automotive plastics sector.
