Mapping the future of the stainless steel industry in Europe

As global sustainability and technological transitions accelerate, stainless steel is gaining strategic importance given its increasing market size, diverse applications across key industries, and recognition as a sustainable material with low-carbon potential. Yet the European industry faces mounting pressure: domestic production is declining, import reliance on Asia is rising, and a rapidly shifting regulatory landscape is making the future for domestic actors uncertain.

Commissioned by Suter Inox, sus.lab set out to make sense of this shifting landscape by mapping the current state of the European stainless steel industry and identifying key trends likely to shape its future. Drawing on a review of over 30 EU policy documents and 8 expert interviews with representatives across the European stainless steel value chain, this report:

  • assesses global market dynamics and the EU regulatory framework,

  • identifies sustainability and technology hotspots along the stainless steel value chain,

  • analyzes four priority areas with the highest disruption potential, and

  • derives actionable implications for industry actors.

The findings aim to inform and support stainless steel industry actors along the value chain in navigating the challenges and opportunities in the context of a shifting European market.
